The neocons have framed their side as "pro-life." Kind of hard to argue with being pro-life, isn't it? The left's answer, "pro-choice," simply doesn't provide a satisfactory alternative.

The left should recast their position and borrow an effective but morally bankrupt strategy from the right. Quite simply, they should recast the abortion debate as a conservative "war on freedom." Here in America, "choice" lacks the emotional impact of "freedom." The religious right is waging a war on freedom. In this war, they are betraying the principles valued by most Americans. What is more fundamental than freedom over one's person?

Yes, I admit that it makes me sick how the right casts everything as a war on (insert cause of the moment). But if the left were to fight them using this approach, it just might work. And if it fails, it should at least neutralize the efficacy of the tactic for future causes.

The other prong that the left needs to play up in the abortion debate is the blatant sexism inherent in the war on freedom. Conservatives want to put women in their place by telling them what they can and cannot do with their own bodies. Wealthy white male politicians are making laws that affect young women.

One of my favorite bumper stickers of all time simply said, "Against abortion; don't have one."

Tagged as: abortion, Politics, Reproductive Rights

Why GOP Leaders Worry About Pro-Life Wins

Why GOP Leaders Worry About Pro-Life Wins - Newsweek Politics - MSNBC.com

I thought this was an interesting article. "With states moving to restrict abortion and the Supreme Court drawing closer to the day when it might actually reverse Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision guaranteeing a woman's right to an abortion, GOP leaders see big political risks." Could it be that these Republican politicians who have been using abortion to rally their base for decades did so for political rather than ideological goals?

This article makes it fairly clear that Republican politicians are smart enough to know that they may encounter a backlash if Roe falls. Moreover, they would lose what has been their most consistent rallying cry. Trying to replace abortion with gay marriage or some other issue isn't going to be easy. Thus, the fall of Roe may end up being a disaster for the Republican party.
