Big Media Wins, America Loses

According to StopBigMedia.com, the Federal Communications Commission voted today to remove barriers to additional media consolidation. Despite public pressure and the protests of several members of Congress, they gave in to big media.

Today’s vote was a confirmation that the FCC has turned its back on its own mission and mandate to foster localism, diversity, and competition. The Commission, which is supposed to be dedicated to protecting the public interest on the public’s airwaves, has shown today that it is held hostage by Big Media’s campaign contributions and high-powered lobbyists. Their corrupt process and biased research ensured that they reached a preordained conclusion today to gut the few remaining protections for local media.
This is a serious blow to independent and alternative media and should be a source of concern for anyone concerned about the effect of corporate ownership of the news media. I don't know about you, but I am sickened by much of the fluff being passed off as news these days. We're at war, and we're being fed Paris Hilton nonsense!

Very disappointing. Without local, independent media our nation is going to slide even faster into fascism.

Kevin J. Martin is an Anti-American weasel. I suggest everyone who would like to see his rear-end move along to his next gig with either Wall Street or K-Street expedited, should also cancel all their NEWSPAPER subscriptions, and send their newspaper's OMBUDSMAN and/or Public Editors a message to let them know you are no longer a patron of their businesses as a direct result of the FAVORS they've just purchased from their Public Employee Kevin. J. Martin. Unreasonable? Maybe, but no more so than Kevin's anti-American actions. WE-THE-PEOPLE don't have much democracy left ... but there are SOME things we can still do to fight back against the Bush Cartel.

I find this to be a very funny post and responses. More Americans are getting their news from alternative media than ever before. This blog is a perfect example. Let the big media consolidate they will end up like every other huge slow company. Irrelevant and bankrupt. Delts can you get any more independent than this blog?

jgilman,

Do you honestly believe that when corporations get huge they fail and go bankrupt? Do you not know that out of the 100 largest economies, that 51 are corporations and 49 are countries (source)?

A very small fraction of the American people get their news from blogs. Most get everything from TV news stations.
